RED confirms development of super DSLR based on Monstro chipset

According to Endgadget, RED Digital Cinema - who designed the 4K RED One from scratch and soon to release the 5K RED Epic – intends to incorporate the 5K Monsro chip into a new camera “aimed squarely at the DSLR market”.

For those unfamiliar with the company, RED Digital Cinema was founded by Jim Jannard who founded Oakley Sunglasses. In November of last year, Jim sold Oakley to Luxottica, the owner of Ray-Ban, for a reported $2.1 billion. Wired Magazine has a fantastic article about Jim’s amazing accomplishments in new world of digital cinema since the sale of Oakley.

If these rumors are true, I suspect your next DSLR purchase may not be a Canon or (God forbid) Nikon but a RED “gun” capable of shooting ultra-high resolution stills at unrivaled FPS but that also captures digital video at resolutions far exceeding 35mm film.

PhotoCalc is a utility for iPhone and iPod for photographers to calculate exposure reciprocation, depth of field, and flash exposure. It also contains a cool version of Sunrise that, using your current location, calculates sunrise, sunset and solar noon times.
