Vincent LaForet creates additional 5D Mark II content

Vincent Laforet certainly knows a good thing when he sees it and is wise to continue the buzz generated by his first 5D Mark II movie entitle Reverie. This project follows less of a scripted storyline but nevertheless further demonstrates the capability of the recently released 5D Mark II.

My WordPress blog did not take kindly to embedding the SmugMug hosted video so I’ll have to send you off to LaForet’s blog to see his latest creative undertaking.

Toshiba’s Timesculpture Commercial

Timesculpture commercial by Toshiba was shot using 200 Toshiba Gigashot camcorders and is presented as an evolution to the famous “Bullet Time” introduced by the Matrix.

“Rather than showing a 3-D rotation of a still moment, this groundbreaking new filming process manipulates moving snapshots of time using Toshiba technology, redefining cinematic human movement”. No CGI imagery was used on the commercial. Check out the commercial followed by a behind the scenes look at how it was produced.

RED sets new benchmark in file size, fps and modularity.

After much anticipation, RED has released the specifications for its Digital Stills and Motion Camera (DMSC) system. Sounds to me like RED had convergence in mind when developing this hardware. As many of you know, after Canon dropped the prototypes of the 5D Mark II, RED founder Jim Jannard announced that the company would suspend the development of the Scarlet sighting “a more advanced view of the future”. Well the future was unveiled this morning and I for one think it looks mighty bright for both the still and video shooters….as if that distinction will matter anymore.

One word best describes the system and that word is: Modular. The system starts with a choice of the professional Scarlet or “master professional” EPIC chipsets or “brains” as RED prefers to call it. From the Mysterium-X and Monstro sensors RED offers sensors starting at 2/3″ to a whopping 6×17cm.  So when a new sensor or “brain” comes out you only purchase it vs. the all of the additional hardware and electronics that support it. RED can accurately state that: The DSMC concept is the epitomy of “Obsolecence Oboslete”

Scarlet will launch in 4 choices ranging from $2,500 (and possibly
less) to $12,000 with a variety of lens mounts (yup, Nikon and Canon)
capable of shooting 3K @120fps on up to 6K @30fps. Epic will offer
similar mounts with capabilities spanning 5K @100fps ($28k) to 9K
@50fps ($45k) — a 28K system hitting 25fps is expected in 2010 for
$55k. Still image resolutions will range from 4.9 megapixels to a
freakish 261 megapixels. Keep in mind however that this modularity will require a more substantial initial investment as battery grips, view finders and recording modules are necessary and potentially costly additons to the system. But hey, at least you won’t have to replace all that expensive glass. Right?

I have not yet invested the time to learn about other specifications like metering modes, auto focus points and format type (although my guess is that it will be the proprietary REDCODE). Check back frequently as I’m anxious to make this information available.

The day of convergence is upon us. My advice is to be prepared to talk about the RED DMSC system as you are out taking video with your cute new 5D Mark II and yes of course you saw the Vincent Laforte video.
